fate point

At the beginning of each session, each player rolls a single fate die. The number of light and dark points generated form a pool of fate. Light points can be spent by the players, and dark points can be spent by the GM. Whenever a point is spent, it is instantly converted into the opposite type of point; for example, a player spends a remaining light point from the pool, and it is instantly converted into a dark point.

Fate points can be spent on four things:

  1. Upgrade a skill check – The player may spend a single point per check to upgrade the check.
  2. Upgrade a difficulty – The player may spend a single point per check to upgrade the difficulty of a check made against that player.
  3. Find something – The player made spend a point to find a single item. The GM has the final say on if an item can be found (decided before the point is spent), based on how much effect it will have on the game and how likely it is,. For example, finding a healing potion in a ditch isn’t likely; finding one in an infirmary is.
  4. Activate a special power – Many special powers can only be activated by spending one or more fate points.
